Droplets of Verse: ‘A Thousand Quid Concealed in a Concrete Mattress’

There can be no excuses any more
In some London boroughs
If you happen to be homeless and poor
Councils call on their reserves of courage

To make difficult decisions
Leaders take responsibility
It’s affecting income generation
And the capital city should always look pretty

Bundles of dirty rags block doorways
You can’t even buy a cappuccino
From a coffee shop these days
Without tripping over a wino

Quality paving slabs are not cheap
And public finances are very stretched
Homeless people should dig deep
A beggar’s life can’t be so wretched

Making money daily, always tax free
No bills to pay, fresh air and freedom
Police officers making sure they’re not lonely
Learning to survive on a very low income

Rough sleepers surely take liberties
By living rent free in a fine metropolis
They have to contribute, by paying fixed penalties
A thousand quid, concealed in their concrete mattress
